Treado's Town House

Here is a rare photo of my grandparents restaurant... Treado's Town House. It was located on Hwy 301 in Sylvania, GA. I must brag for a minute and tell you that it was once world famous. (Jimmy Carter dined there during his campaign). But whether it was or wasn't really famous...it was always famous in my eyes!
Inside that building (which is still standing today (but is closed)) are some of my fondest memories of my childhood. It is there, that I fell in love with food! We (being Baptist) would rush out of church on Sunday's to try and beat the Methodist to be the first in line for the buffet! Not a Sunday went by that we didn't eat there...and if we did miss lunch...we were there for Sunday night dinner.
Once you opened the door at the Town House, you were hit with the smells of home. Everyone knew one another and everyone walked away happy. My grandparents created a legacy through their restaurant... places like the Town House are a rarity these days. I miss it and what it represented to our family.

Before restaurants bought all of their salad dressings pre-made... restaurants like the Town House would actually make them from scratch. I thought I would share the famous Town House Thousand Island Dressing in honor of today's blog.


Town House Thousand Island Dressing

1 Cup Miracle Whip Salad Dressing
1/2 Cup Chili Sauce
1 Chopped Boiled Egg
1 Tablespoon Chopped Pickles

Now is the guessing part: (use your taste buds)
Worcestershire Sauce
Tabasco Sauce
Lemon Juice
Small amount of Grated Onion

Mix All Ingredients and chill until ready to serve.



**Note to those of you from Sylvania who read my blog: Sorry... but the famous Cinnamon Rolls Recipe will never be revealed on my blog...I was sworn to secrecy upon birth! ** I will put other great recipes from the restaurant in the months to follow...leave me a comment and let me know your favorites.

  1. I am one of those from Sylvania who not only ate at Treado's, but knew your grandparents. Your grandfather, Charles gave me a tour of his kitchens when I was a teenager and developing an interest in food prep. He and my father (who just happened to be the Methodist minister) were friends. I remember the cheese spread which was served to every table and of course the cinnamon rolls were to die for. Are there any places where the cinnamon rolls are available today? Will the recipe ever be available? My memories are from the early 1960's so we are talking a long time to be remembering cinnamon rolls!!!

    When we went out on a special date, of course Treado's was the restaurant of choice. Great memories.

  2. Its really sad that these cinamon rolls will never be enjoyed again...does it really do any good to keep a recipe so secret that it can't be enjoyed! The Townhouse has LONG been closed and the Treado's no longer live in Sylvania. And Ms. Margarete doesn't even cater anymore. I promise not to profit from them...I just wanna a taste them again.   3. I remember eating there as well as a young girl in the 1980's. As mentioned above the cheese spread & of course the cinnamon rolls were my favorites as well as the fried chicken. People just don't cook like that anymore, its all about corporate chains and such. I am saddened by the secret but I guess I would do the same. I have tried contacting the Braggs who also owned town house at one point. Any other recipes you'd like to share please email me at makaylalynn@msn.com.   5. Too bad the building doesn't look like that now! It's a disgrace the way it barely stands, almost crumbling. Why in the world keep any recipe a secret after all these years?! Good lord, girl, get a grip! The food was fantastic, but the place is LONG dead. What are you afraid of?

I find your comment to be rude and I would normally not even take the time to write you back--but I feel strongly in the fact that You clearly do not know my family or what the meaning of what a tradition is. Our recipes are our part of our family's traditions. Just as you have special things with your family--some of these recipes, are ours. BTW: Even if I shared the cinnamon roll recipe.. most could never even be able to make it.. it takes watching someone who has crafted it over the years, to be able to do it. I personally can't even make them. My dad is the only one who can. He spent most of his life in the kitchen there at the Town House, helping..so he was given amazing training!

      We agree, we wish still had a functioning restaurant there in Sylvania--but after the deaths of both the founders and in a town that has very little industry--- it doesn't make sense. As a grandchild of the original owners--- I love the foundation that my Grandfather set up for us-- one with family being the forefront.

    2. I hope you will read this. I have purchased the house and restaurant as it stands today. I would like to rebuild the building as it looked in the days of old. It will be a guest house and I would like to decorate in the Era when it was thriving. I would love copies of any pictures of the building and family you would be willing to share. This is very exciting and interesting for me and my family.

  11. Mr. Charles was a special man and friend. When I managed the Winn Dixie in Sylvania during late 70's & 80's he was my Health Inspector also.
    I always took out of town big wheels from W/D to lunch at the Townnhouse, They LOVED it!! Of course all of my family did also. Lots of good memories and meals enjoyed there.
    Could you share the recipes for the stuffed acorn squash and braised short ribs? Thanks for taking time to reply to us.

  12. There were actually 2 other restaurants associated with townhouse in Sylvania. Charles sister ran one in Allendale Sc. and Theola’s brother Bruce Brown Hurst in Statesboro. The current location of the Beaver House.
    While some of the recipes like the cinnamon rolls were from Charles Treado family, most were from Theola’s mother Ida Scott Hurst.
    Charles also dabbled in a pie factory but preservation became a challenge.

  13. I went to this restaurant many times while growing up and visiting with my grandparents, Judge & Mrs. Henry Howard. I have very fond memories of so many wonderful foods, the fabulous pies with the deep meringue.. too many list! One of my favorites, though, was the stuffed acorn squash. Would you share the recipe with me? Thanks so much!
